The Sherley & Ted Craig Humanitarian Award
The Sherley & Ted Craig Humanitarian Award is given in memory of Sherley Fekety Craig and Edward Armstrong Craig, III. Sherley and Ted, in their words and deeds, demonstrated the power of individuals to create a positive impact on the lives of those around them. As loyal friends and supporters of Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh and its efforts to end domestic violence, they made Pittsburgh a better place for their family, friends, and the community at large.
Ted was born in Edgewood and returned to Pittsburgh to practice law after attending Williams College and Harvard Law School. Ted concentrated his practice in trusts and estates, corporate law, and corporate and personal income taxes. He was listed in the Best Lawyers in America in Taxation and Trusts and Estates, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in America. Ted was a member of Kirkpatrick and Lockhart LLP's Management Committee for 20 years and served as the Administrative Partner of the Pittsburgh office and Chair of the Management Committee. Ted was a board member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and served as an elder at the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Fox Chapel Golf Club, the Duquesne Club, and Rolling Rock Club. Additionally, Ted had a love of sports and travel that he shared with his family.
Sherley was born in Edgewood and returned to Pittsburgh after earning a degree in Music from Northwestern University. She married Ted, who she met freshman year at Edgewood High School, and raised three daughters: Lucy, Cindy, and Karen. Sherley shared her lifelong love of music with her family and friends, playing piano, singing showtunes, and regularly attending the symphony and other performances. Sherley also had a passion for gardening and making floral arrangements. Her arrangements were displayed not only in her home, but also at Phipps Conservatory and eventually at Longwood, where she resided for the last four years of her life. When her children reached adulthood, Sherley was inspired to pursue a master's degree in social work at the University of Pittsburgh. She had a gift for listening to others and offering thoughtful and compassionate advice. She volunteered for many non-profit organizations and was a long-serving member of the WC&S Advisory Council and the committee to create a special Celebrating Survivors event each year.
The Craigs touched the lives of those with whom they came into contact and demonstrated that individuals can affect real change in their community. Today, Sherley & Ted’s family and friends honor their memory by continuing their support of Women’s Center & Shelter. Through the generosity of many donors, the renovated outdoor children’s and pet play areas have been named in honor of Ted and Sherley.
